For many years the scientific community in the USA has benefited from its inclusive policy on immigration, push for greater individual freedoms, and been a melting pot for the brightest and best minds across the globe. Freedom from government intrusion allows science to cooperate, share knowledge, and solve complex problems much quicker than if put under the thumb of a government who wishes to control the direction and scope of scientific studies.
However, the last decade America has been falling behind in its commitment to scientific endeavors. Europe is becoming the new center for scientific minds to gather and do new science. China is outpacing America in several scientific fronts including space exploration, quantum computing, and fusion research.
The most recent political takeover of the US govt by Trump has created the most harmful situation to the scientific community in America in the last 100 years. Science wasn't always the answer to many of society's problems. I fear when uneducated people no longer understand science, the method for which science is used to discover, and becomes another topic of discussion people feel they can dismiss or accept, we are in a world of trouble.
This group is a way to bring people together to help them understand, get excited about new science, and allow them to see when corporations use science to harm the world, in however they choose to use it, it's not science they should blame, it's the corporate world.
